Around 1 in 5 Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Understanding how to talk about mental health and help someone in need are important skills. Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when thinking about starting a conversation with someone they are concerned about.
During a Mental Health First Aid® (MHFATM) course, participants will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems and learn the skills to feel confident and be able to help.
Having mental health first aid skills means that you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference in your community.
Mental Health First Aid courses are facilitated by skilled instructors trained and licenced by MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID AUSTRALIA.
Course Overview
The refresher course allows participants who have previously completed a Standard Mental Health First Aid® course to refresh their knowledge and skills. The course also offers Accredited Mental Health First AidersTM an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further 3 years.
Participants will gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field, learn the 3 key actions to help someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and work through complex mental health first aid interactions.
Delivery Mode & Duration
This is a 4 hour face-to-face course.
Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
- Participants must be adults, 18 years or older.
- Participants must have completed a full 2-day Mental Health First Aid face-to-face course or a Blended or Blended Online Mental Health First Aid course, followed by the completion of an accreditation assessment within the last three (3) years.
What certification do you get?
This is a non-accredited course. On successful completion of this course, you will be issued a Certificate of Accreditation in:
- Accredited Mental Health First Aider (TM)
- Participants who satisfactorily complete the online assessment will receive a Certificate of Accreditation from Mental Health First Aid Australia, valid for three years.
