Connecting communities across the Fraser Coast through expanded transport services

Bringing Maryborough and Hervey Bay closer together

Residents across the Fraser Coast will soon benefit from more connected, reliable and accessible transport, with St John Queensland bringing together its Community Transport service areas across Maryborough and Hervey Bay.

This initiative strengthens connections between two key regional hubs and the communities in between, helping more people stay active, independent and engaged in their local community. From this expansion, eligible residents can access safe, reliable and affordable transport for medical appointments, shopping and essential community activities—supporting health, wellbeing and social connection.

St John QLD has proudly delivered Community Transport services across the Fraser Coast for more than 20 years, and this latest step reflects its ongoing commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the community.

By combining service areas, St John QLD can sustainably use available resources to better support residents across the region, including those living in smaller communities such as Dandathu, Aldershot and Duckinwilla, as well as the communities already supported in Torbanlea, Howard and Burrum Heads.

This expanded footprint ensures more people can access essential services and participate in community life, particularly as many residents rely on Hervey Bay for medical and specialist care.

Supporting access to essential services

Strong connections already exist between Maryborough and Hervey Bay, particularly when it comes to healthcare. With many medical services located in Hervey Bay, access to reliable and affordable transport is critical for residents across the Fraser Coast.

To support this need, St John QLD offers an intercity transport option between Maryborough and Hervey Bay for eligible funded clients, available for just $20 each way—providing a practical and affordable solution for accessing appointments and services.

Community Transport services are available for seniors over 65 through Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) or Support at Home (SaH) funding. People under 65 who have trouble accessing their community can also access services through the Community Transport Program (CTP), funded by the Queensland Government, helping address transport disadvantage and improve access to essential services.

Gay Cayabyab, Centre Manager of the Maryborough Neighbourhood Centre, welcomed the expanded service:

“This expanded service will make a real difference for people in Maryborough. Having an affordable and reliable transport option means more residents can access essential services, attend appointments and explore opportunities beyond their immediate area. It helps broaden horizons and strengthens community wellbeing.”

George Seymour also highlighted the importance of strengthening regional connections:

“Strong connections between our communities are vital, especially when it comes to accessing healthcare and essential services. This initiative by St John QLD is a practical and meaningful way to support residents across the Fraser Coast and ensure no one is left behind.”

As a not-for-profit organisation, St John QLD remains committed to supporting communities with compassion, care and reliability. By connecting communities across the Fraser Coast, St John QLD continues to deliver on its promise of being Here to Help.
