St John Ambulance Queensland will proudly participate in ANZAC Day services across Queensland on April 25, reflecting on the vital, historic contributions of the organisation during both World War I and World War II.
With a legacy of unwavering commitment to community care and medical support, St John Ambulance played a pivotal role during both conflicts. From the front lines to the home front, St John volunteers provided critical first aid training, supported military hospitals, and delivered essential medical services.
During World War I, St John Ambulance trained thousands of volunteers, including many women, to serve in hospitals across Australia and overseas. In partnership with the Australian Red Cross, the organisation helped coordinate the Voluntary Aid Detachments, ensuring medical support reached those in urgent need.
In World War II, St John once again stepped forward, working alongside the Red Cross to offer medical care and welfare services to both soldiers and civilians. As the war touched every corner of daily life, St John volunteers became a lifeline for communities affected by air raids and wartime disruption.
Peter Warrener, CEO of St John Ambulance Queensland, reflected on the organisation’s enduring mission: “Our mission has always been ‘With you in times of need’. St John was there for our soldiers during wartime conflict, and we are still here supporting our community today when they need it most.”
This ANZAC Day, St John Ambulance Queensland volunteers will continue a proud tradition by providing first aid services at ceremonies across the state.
Their presence not only honours the sacrifices of the past but also reinforces the organisation’s ongoing commitment to care, compassion, and community service.
As St John commemorates its historic wartime role, the organisation remains deeply dedicated to serving the community and upholding the values that have guided it for more than a century.
