About this course

Mental illness is a leading cause of disability and suffering in Australia.  Each year, approximately one in five Australians suffer symptoms of a common mental illness such as depression or anxiety.  The toll on individuals and their families is significant.  In the workplace, mental illness is a leading cause of lost productivity, not only through time off, but also through the illness causing the worker difficulty in functioning in the workplace.

 

Mental health training programs teach members of the public how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health problem, or who may be in a crisis.  Like traditional first aid, Mental Health training does not teach people how to diagnose or treat mental problems.  Instead, the training teaches people how to identify potential problems or crisis situations, offer initial support and how and when to refer people to appropriate support services.

 

Not all crises are mental health related; sometimes individuals encounter a stressful situation that can potentially overwhelm their ability to cope, or they may be at risk of harm. Training in crisis support helps people to recognise these situations and respond appropriately, including identifying and responding to safety concerns, as well as supporting the individual in accessing professional support.

 

This two-day plus eLearning course includes and expands on the information provided in the First Aid for the Mind course. It provides participants with the skill and knowledge they need to recognise situations where people may be in imminent crisis and then work collaboratively to minimise any safety concerns and to make plans to access required support services.

 

Participants will be assessed via practical roleplays and a theory assessment.  

Participants who have attended First Aid for the Mind within the last twelve months can apply for credit for Day One of this course.

 

This course is suitable for:

Managers, supervisors, community service workers and others who may find themselves involved in mental health and other crisis interventions.

 

Outcomes:

Successful participants will receive a Statement of Attainment with the unit CHCCCS019​ Recognise and respond to crisis situations.
