St John Ambulance Australia Queensland is committed to promoting the importance of first aid in our community and believes there is no better place to start than in our primary schools. The First Aid in Schools Program is a free program we offer to provide primary school-aged children with first aid skills they can use in the event of an emergency.
The program is absolutely free to Queensland primary schools and students.
The program is specifically designed with the children’s learning in mind. It is interactive, fun and promises to impart a key set of skills that will empower young people with the ability to act in case of an emergency.
What’s in it for the children...
- How to call an ambulance
- Danger assessments and personal safety - what to look out for and what to do
- Dealing with an unconscious person
- Recovery position demonstration and practice
A life saved
When 7-month-old Ryder started choking during a car trip, he didn’t make a sound. Luckily for him, his sister Hayley sprang into action: by ripping him out of his seat and patting his back until he could breathe again, the 12-year-old saved her baby brother’s life. This outcome is testament to the fact that First Aid saves lives, and even young children can become lifesavers.

Scope and delivery methods:
In 2019 we have plans to deliver the program in the following regions – Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Brisbane northside, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.
As our funding allows, we will expand the program to other regions across Queensland over coming years.
The program will initially only be delivered face-to-face in the classroom by trained St John First Aid in Schools Educators. An Educator will come to the school to conduct the 45 minute session with the various classes - Prep to Year 6. Sessions can be comfortably delivered to up to 30 students per class.
E-Learning coming soon
There are plans underway to develop a supporting e-learning module, so the sessions can be a combination of online materials supported by teacher guided practical demonstrations. This will suit schools in more remote areas where face-to-face delivery by an Educator is more challenging.
All St John First Aid in Schools Educators are vetted and trained, and possess:
- Working with Children Check
- Criminal Record Check
- First Aid Qualification
- First Aid in Schools Educator Accreditation Training
The First Aid in Schools Program is a flagship community service program for St John Qld, which makes real difference to the lives of school children and the wider Queensland community.
