Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is tragic and can happen to anyone, regardless of age or gender, anytime. More than 33,000 Australians suffer SCA each year, which equates to a staggering 90 people every day, and roughly only 10 per cent survive.1

For young people, there are often no prior symptoms of SCA, and this contributes to five Australians under 35 suddenly dying each week 2, leaving shattered loved ones behind.

Use of defibrillators dramatically increases the survival rate for cardiac arrest, when used after calling 000 and commencing CPR.  The size of a lunchbox, defibrillators work by resetting a person’s heart rhythm if their heart is not beating correctly.

“Defibrillators save lives, it’s that simple, and we don’t want people to die prematurely because they suffer a cardiac arrest and no one around them is able to help,” said Mr Leo McNamara, Regional Manager of St John Ambulance (Qld).

“The clock starts ticking as soon as a person hits the floor.  Survival rates decrease by seven to ten per cent for every minute that passes without defibrillation, and after eight minutes there is little chance of survival.”

Having a defibrillator in your work place or organisation can be the difference between life and death.  The units are simple to use, with easy to follow visual and voice prompts to guide the user in an emergency.

There’s never been a better time to invest in a defibrillator, with St John currently offering a free carry case and responder kit, alarmed cabinet and signage with every defibrillator purchase.3
