This is a wonderful low-key service where volunteers telephone and support people in need on a regular basis. Silver Cord clients are almost always Home and Community Care (HACC) clients. Volunteer callers ring security clients daily and friendship clients less often but still regularly.
The security calls can, and do, save lives. If the call goes unanswered, a process is commenced that ensures the client is visited by one of their friends, neighbours, or relatives. If we cannot contact any of the client’s named contacts, we ask the local police to do a welfare check.
Friendship calls really can change and enhance the lives of the clients – they love to hear from their ‘phone friends’, and for some, it may be the only friendly conversation they have all week. Calls are enjoyed by callers and clients.
There is no counselling or professional advice provided, just a friendly voice to ask if they are okay today. These chats provide security and social support to those in need.
To volunteer please submit a volunteer enquiry form.
